Pounderland (Getting my Country Back)
So now you’ve got your country back, the red, the white the blue,
I can tell by the way you’re gloating that it meant a lot to you
Freed from the shackles of servitude, or so newspapers tell
Back in our green and pleasant land and now all will be well
in your post-industrial wilderness you dream of hope and glory
Perhaps we’ll rule the waves again or some such far-fetched story
To be honest no one has a clue, it's anybody’s guess
And some smarter heads are saying that we’re really in a mess
But they are so called experts, we don’t need them anymore
So let's pull up the drawbridge and bolt the iron door
Surround our sceptred island with watchtower and barbed wire
And if anyone tries to sneak in they’ll soon come under fire
This country’s standing tall and proud so be making no mistake
Rejoice and know that once again Old Blighty is awake
The aspidistra’s flying high, the lions they will roar
And folk in other countries will look at us in awe
But what of those who are in charge now you’ve made your choice?
Do you really think they’ll take the time to listen to your voice?
For they are the affluent and privileged, and all have common cause
And it sure as hell will not be you who gets to shape our laws
They like to keep you in your place, you will not get a say
And as they strip away your dignity, it's just a game they play
You did your part, you cast your vote, with joy you must confess
But don’t imagine for one second there’s cash for the NHS
They’ll carry on as they’ve always done in their asset-stripping way
This magnificent kleptocracy, where it's the downtrodden that pay
Dancing a jig on your human rights they’ll make you take the blame
But never a whisper will be heard when you go to complain
But worry not for all is good, immigration might be less
The solution to all our problems, according to the Press
But who will work in all those jobs, not many want to do?
Lying on a hospital trolley and there’s no one there for you
It wasn’t the EU that privatised YOUR British Rail
And neither was it they who did the same to YOUR Royal Mail
YOUR Water industry, YOUR British Gas, YOUR British telecom
YOUR prisons and police force – the list goes on and on
Smashed YOUR trade unions, flogged off YOUR British Steel
AND it wasn’t the EU that ushered in sky-high tuition fees
Shut down all YOUR coal mines, or underfunded education
Cut jobs in YOUR armed forces, sold off YOUR power stations
The list is almost endless, but they will find plenty more
It is what they excel at, it's what they’re in power for
They’re off the leash, unbridled, and now they’re scenting blood
Their snouts are well inside the trough, they’re cavorting in the mud
Tax-dodgers and non-domiciles are filling up their pots
Tax-dodgers and non-domiciles are filling up their pots
While Murdoch and his cronies will be calling all the shots
There’ll be a price for you to pay, when the veneer starts to crack
So, enjoy the moment while you can, you’ve got your country back
